European Consumer Payment Report 2023 Executive Summary

Every year, Intrum surveys more than 20,000 consumers across Europe to understand their spending habits and how households manage their finances on a monthly basis.

In recent times, consumers have been beat by a range of challenges, from the Covid-19 pandemic to geopolitical instability, rising interest rates and a cost of living crisis. Understanding the impact of these events on the lives of real people enables Intrum and our clients to be more empathetic and effective.

This year, 35% of consumers said they have been forced to skip at least one bill payment in the last 12 months, 43% of them due to lack of money. Meanwhile, more than a third of respondents said they have less than one month’s savings to fall back on.

Also revealed in the research:

  • Consumers express their disapproval of unethical business practices
  • How much consumers are overspending by and which countries are suffering most
  • The impact of ‘subscription creep’ and buy now, pay later products
  • Levels of financial education and their knock-on effect on behaviour.
